Are Swimming Pools a Good Investment?

There are so many exterior upgrades that homeowners can do, but for homeowners in Kansas City, there seems to be one recurring element: swimming pools. The biggest concern for many homeowners is whether or not getting a swimming pool installed is a good investment, and this can actually be a very complex question to answer in a general sense. We’re going to dive into whether swimming pools are a good investment.

Are Swimming Pools A Good Investment?

The best answer is that it depends. If you look at it from the perspective of a real estate professional like a realtor, you will get one answer. If you look at it from the point of view of the homeowner, you are likely to get a far different answer. The main reason for this is that it is incredibly difficult to put an actual dollar value on things like quality time and family enjoyment. Consider how long you’ll be in the home, as well as whether you’re likely to get the use out of it to justify the expense.

    Staying Put?

Before you can properly judge whether your swimming pool will be a good investment, first consider if you’re going to be selling in the next five years or so. If so, then you may need to determine if you were likely to get a return on that initial investment in your selling price. If not, then you will need to decide if you’re likely to get the quality time out of it that would make a good return on that investment. But if you aren’t selling in the near future, then the chances become much better that you’ll be able to get enjoyment out of it in the coming years.

    The Pool Lifestyle

Another thing to consider is whether the pool will give you the quality of life that you’ll be able to appreciate for years to come. Remember that while swimming pools are a significant cost investment, they also have an incredibly diverse range of uses.

Not only can they be a great place for all members of the family to enjoy low-impact exercise, which is ideal for preventing injury from impact. It also is a great location for all generations of the family, and their friends, to hold activities or events. These types of bonding and family activities are difficult to place a dollar value on, so they may need more subjective consideration when deciding if a pool is a good investment for you and your family.

    Installation Isn’t The End

One thing that many people fail to consider when planning for a swimming pool installation, is the continued cost of operation and maintenance that it will require. Installation is only the end of the initial investment, and there will be continued investments of both time and money needed through the years to keep the pool looking good and operating smoothly.

The costs of maintenance and operation that begin once installation completes should be considered heavily beforehand, and in many cases, they should be budgeted for as well. For many families, the additional annual expense of keeping a pool can be the deciding factor in whether or not to get one at all.
