General
What makes High Prairie Outdoors & Pools different from other landscaping and pool companies?

High Prairie Outdoors & Pools is the nation's only Class-1 certified outdoor living contractor. Rather than treating design, construction, and maintenance as separate services, we bring them together through our Legacy Program. From your Discovery Meeting to long-term Estate Stewardship, one experienced team plans, builds, and cares for your outdoor environment so it continues to become more beautiful, functional, and enjoyable for years to come.

What does it mean that High Prairie is the nation's only Class-1 certified outdoor living contractor?

Class-1 certification recognizes the highest standards of craftsmanship, construction practices, and professionalism in the outdoor living industry. For homeowners, it means your outdoor environment is designed, built, and cared for by a team committed to exceptional quality, long-term performance, and thoughtful attention to every detail. Our approach focuses on creating outdoor environments that don't just last, they improve over time.

Why should Class-1 certification matter to me?

Choosing an outdoor living contractor is about more than selecting someone who can build a beautiful patio or pool. It's about trusting a team with a significant investment in your home. Class-1 certification demonstrates that High Prairie follows elevated standards for design, construction, and long-term care, giving you confidence that your outdoor environment is built with quality and longevity in mind.

How does Class-1 certification affect the quality of my project?

Class-1 certification influences every stage of your project, from planning and engineering to material selection and construction. Our team follows proven building methods, emphasizes precision craftsmanship, and considers how every detail will perform years from now, not just on the day your project is completed.

Why does High Prairie self-perform most of its work?

Approximately 95 to 98 percent of our work is completed by our own High Prairie Pros rather than subcontractors. Keeping nearly every aspect of construction in-house gives us greater control over quality, scheduling, communication, and craftsmanship while allowing every team member to work toward the same vision for your property.

Is High Prairie more expensive than other contractors?

Our projects are designed for homeowners who value long-term quality over short-term savings. While we may not be the lowest-priced option, our clients appreciate investing in thoughtful planning, exceptional craftsmanship, one experienced team, and an outdoor environment that's designed to become more beautiful over time instead of requiring costly corrections or renovations later.

What services does High Prairie provide?

We create complete outdoor environments through landscape design, custom pools and spas, patios, outdoor kitchens, fire features, masonry, lighting, irrigation, drainage, planting, fine gardening, lawn care, seasonal enhancements, and long-term Estate Stewardship. Rather than treating these as separate services, we design them to work together as one cohesive environment tailored to the way you live.

What kinds of projects does High Prairie specialize in?

We specialize in designing, building, and caring for complete outdoor environments. Some homeowners come to us for a full property transformation, while others begin with a single project that grows over time. Through the Legacy Program, every improvement is planned as part of a larger vision, allowing your outdoor environment to evolve naturally as your needs change.

Do you work on existing homes or only new construction?

We work with both. Many of our projects involve reimagining existing properties, incorporating mature trees, established gardens, or existing outdoor features into a new master plan. During your Discovery Meeting, we'll evaluate your property and recommend the approach that best supports your long-term goals.

Do you only work on large estate homes?

While many of our projects are completed on larger properties, the best fit isn't determined by acreage. We work with homeowners who value thoughtful planning, exceptional craftsmanship, and a long-term relationship with one trusted team. Whether your property is half an acre or several, our goal is to create an outdoor environment that complements your home and lifestyle.

Where does High Prairie provide services?

We proudly serve homeowners throughout the greater Kansas City area, including communities on both the Kansas and Missouri sides of the metro. If you're unsure whether your property falls within our service area, our team is happy to discuss your project.

Why do you call them "outdoor environments" instead of landscaping?

Landscaping is only one part of your property. Your pool, patios, gardens, lighting, drainage, irrigation, and outdoor living spaces all work together to shape how your property looks, functions, and feels. We design these elements as one complete outdoor environment because that's how families actually experience them, not as a collection of separate projects.

Why should I choose one company instead of hiring multiple contractors?

Working with one experienced team creates a smoother experience from beginning to end. Instead of coordinating multiple contractors with different schedules and priorities, you'll have one team responsible for planning, construction, communication, and long-term care. The result is a more cohesive outdoor environment, fewer surprises during construction, and a partner who understands your property long after the project is complete.

The Legacy Program
What is the Legacy Program?

The Legacy Program is High Prairie's proven system for designing, building, and caring for complete outdoor environments. Most contractors complete a project and move on. We take a different approach by combining thoughtful planning, precision construction, and long-term Estate Stewardship under one team, helping your property become more beautiful and valuable with every passing year.

How is the Legacy Program different from a traditional design-build company?

The Legacy Program is far more than a design-build service—it's a comprehensive approach to creating an enduring outdoor lifestyle. Unlike traditional contractors who focus primarily on plans and construction, our process begins with experience-driven Discovery, where we design around how your family lives, relaxes, entertains, and connects. We then bring that vision to life through our proprietary Legacy Method, combining European construction techniques, artisan craftsmanship, and curated materials from around the world—including self-imported natural stone, handcrafted tile, bespoke finishes, and exclusive products rarely available in our region—to create an outdoor environment that is both deeply personal and built to endure for generations.

What truly sets the Legacy Program apart is that our relationship doesn't end when construction is complete. Through our optional Estate Stewardship and concierge care programs, we continue protecting, refining, and enhancing your property with fine gardening, pool care, seasonal styling, furnishings, and ongoing lifestyle guidance. Rather than coordinating multiple contractors, you gain a trusted long-term partner dedicated to ensuring your outdoor environment becomes more beautiful, valuable, and enjoyable with every passing year.

Why is the Legacy Program beneficial for homeowners?

The Legacy Program creates more than a beautiful outdoor space—it creates a better way to live. Every detail is intentionally designed around your family's lifestyle, then crafted using enduring construction methods, artisan-level craftsmanship, and curated materials selected to age gracefully for decades rather than require frequent replacement. The result is an outdoor environment that becomes more beautiful, functional, and valuable over time while providing daily opportunities for relaxation, wellness, connection, and pride of ownership. With the added confidence of ongoing Estate Stewardship, you can simply enjoy your property knowing it is thoughtfully cared for by the same trusted team that designed and built it, protecting both your investment and the lifestyle it was created to inspire.

Can my project be completed in phases?

Absolutely. Many homeowners choose to complete their outdoor environment over time. We begin by creating a master plan for the entire property, allowing future additions, such as a pool, outdoor kitchen, or expanded gardens, to fit seamlessly into the original vision instead of looking like separate projects completed years apart.

Can High Prairie improve an existing landscape instead of starting over?

Yes. Not every property requires a complete redesign. During your Discovery Meeting, we'll evaluate your existing landscape to determine what should be preserved, enhanced, or reimagined. Our goal is to build upon what already works while creating a more cohesive outdoor environment for the future.

Do I have to commit to the entire Legacy Program?

No. Every homeowner's needs are different. Some clients already have a design. Some clients begin with a landscape renovation or pool project and choose to add Estate Stewardship later. Others know from the beginning that they're looking for a long-term partner to care for their property. We'll help you determine the approach that best fits your goals.

What happens after my project is complete?

Construction is only one chapter of your property's story. Many homeowners continue their relationship with High Prairie through Estate Stewardship, allowing the same team that designed and built their outdoor environment to care for it as it matures. We proactively monitor your property's health, recommend thoughtful improvements, and help protect your investment so it continues getting better over time.

Can High Prairie continue improving my property in the future?

Absolutely. One of the greatest advantages of the Legacy Program is that your property is never viewed as a finished project. Whether you decide to add a new gathering space, outdoor kitchen, pool, gardens, lighting, or other enhancements years from now, every improvement is designed to complement the original vision, creating an outdoor environment that evolves alongside your family and the way you live.

Design & Installation
How does your design process work?

Every project begins with a Discovery Meeting where we learn about your property, your goals, and how you want to enjoy your outdoor environment. If you decide to proceed with a design package, we complete a detailed site analysis, evaluating everything from architecture and drainage to views, grading, and existing landscape features, before creating a design tailored to your lifestyle and long-term vision.

What happens during the Discovery Meeting?

The Discovery Meeting is a deep interview and investment planning session at our studio. It's an opportunity for us to understand how you want to live outdoors, what challenges you're hoping to solve, and what experiences you want your outdoor environment to create. We'll also walk your property and discuss investment expectations so we can determine the best path forward. If we’re a good fit for each other, we’ll provide an option to proceed with a design package.

How involved will I be during the design process?

Your input is an important part of creating an outdoor environment that's uniquely yours. We'll guide you through design concepts, material selections, and key decisions while providing recommendations based on our experience. Together, we'll create a space that reflects your home, your lifestyle, and your goals.

Can you work with my existing landscape?

Absolutely. Many of our projects begin with an existing landscape that has great potential. We'll evaluate what should be preserved, enhanced, or replaced and create a cohesive design that blends existing features with new improvements.

Can you work from plans created by another landscape designer or architect?

We're happy to review existing plans as a starting point. Depending on the project, we may recommend adjustments that improve construction quality, long-term performance, or how the design functions as part of your complete outdoor environment.

Can my project be built in phases?

Yes. Many homeowners choose to complete their outdoor environment over several years. Because every project begins with a comprehensive master plan, future additions fit naturally into the original design, allowing your property to evolve without losing its overall character or cohesion.

Who will build my project?

Your project will be built primarily by our own High Prairie Pros. Because we self-perform nearly all aspects of construction, you'll work with one experienced team that's committed to maintaining consistent craftsmanship, clear communication, and attention to detail throughout the project.

Will I have one point of contact during construction?

Yes. Throughout your project, you'll have a dedicated point of contact who will keep you informed about progress, answer questions, and coordinate the many details involved in construction, making the experience as seamless as possible.

How long does the design process take?

Every project is unique, so design timelines vary depending on the size, complexity, and scope of work. During your Discovery Meeting, we'll discuss the anticipated timeline and keep you informed as your design progresses. The comprehensive discovery, assessment, concept review, and final reveal usually take between 6-12 weeks. This is dependent upon scope complexity, time of year, and requested revisions.

How long will construction take?

Construction timelines depend on factors such as project size, weather, permitting, material availability, and seasonal scheduling. Before work begins, we'll provide an estimated timeline and communicate regularly so you know what to expect throughout the process.

For complex projects or pools, many homeowners begin the design process 12-16 months in advance. These can sometimes be fast-tracked, but it is safe to plan well ahead. Once you sign a construction agreement, it can take 12-16 weeks of permitting, engineering, and pre-construction planning before a project can start. This also doesn’t take into account current production backlog on other commitments. Active construction depends on scope, weather, and access. For example a pool can take 3-9 months.

Do you handle permits and approvals?

Yes. When permits are required, our team coordinates the permitting process with the appropriate municipalities and agencies, helping move your project forward while managing the necessary documentation and inspections.

What materials do you recommend?

We recommend materials based on their long-term performance, durability, maintenance requirements, and how well they complement your home and lifestyle. Every recommendation is made with the goal of creating an outdoor environment that remains beautiful and functional for decades.

Why don't you recommend concrete patios?

Our recommendation isn't about the surface material—it's about what's underneath it. We build our patios using our Performance Trass Foundation System, a European-inspired construction method that creates a durable, permeable foundation before installing your choice of natural stone, porcelain, brick, or engineered pavers on top. Unlike traditional concrete slabs that trap water and are prone to cracking and heaving in Kansas City's freeze-thaw cycles, our system is designed to drain water naturally, reduce movement, and provide exceptional longevity. The result is a patio that's more durable, more beautiful, and part of a sophisticated water management system rather than a source of runoff and drainage problems.

Do you build custom swimming pools?

Yes. Every pool we build is thoughtfully integrated into the surrounding landscape, patios, gardens, and outdoor living spaces. Rather than treating the pool as a standalone feature, we design it as one part of a complete outdoor environment that complements your home and the way your family lives. We provide three classes of construction methods so that homeowners can make educated decisions on what’s best for their family.

Can you design outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, pergolas, and other outdoor living features?

Absolutely. Outdoor kitchens, fire features, pergolas, shade structures, lighting, water features, and gathering spaces are all designed as part of your overall master plan, creating an outdoor environment where every feature works together to support relaxation, entertaining, and everyday living.

By curating outdoor kitchen cabinetry that lives like your indoor kitchen and sourcing the best louvered structures our clients benefit from a level of functionality and style that wasn’t available years ago. In addition, our landscape lighting program has evolved to both enhance life beyond daylight hours while provided more options for home automation integration.

What happens if I want to make changes during construction?

Changes occasionally happen as projects evolve or new ideas emerge. If you'd like to make adjustments during construction, we'll discuss the available options, explain how the changes may affect the timeline or investment, and help you make informed decisions while protecting the overall vision for your outdoor environment.

Estate Stewardship
What is Estate Stewardship?

Estate Stewardship is High Prairie's long-term care system for outdoor environments. Think of it as property management for the outdoors. Rather than simply maintaining your property, our team proactively cares for every part of it, from fine gardening and irrigation to pools, lighting, and seasonal enhancements, helping your outdoor environment become more beautiful and functional year after year.

What is included in Estate Stewardship?

Every Estate Stewardship plan is customized to the unique needs of your property. Depending on your outdoor environment, services may include fine gardening, lawn care, seasonal flowers, irrigation management, pool care, landscape lighting maintenance, drainage inspections, plant health care, mulch installation, seasonal cleanups, and ongoing property evaluations. Your Stewardship plan is designed to protect your investment while continually improving your property over time.

How is Estate Stewardship different from traditional landscape maintenance?

Traditional landscape maintenance focuses on maintaining what already exists. Estate Stewardship goes beyond maintenance by proactively evaluating your property, anticipating future needs, and recommending thoughtful improvements that help your outdoor environment mature according to its original design. Our goal isn't simply to preserve your landscape, but to help it improve year after year. Estate Stewardship also prevents the common practice of a fragmented care team where homeowners have a different company for each part of their outdoor care. The old way of doing things meant the homeowner had to manage a maintenance company, mowing company, plant healthcare/turf company,  irrigation company, and pool company separately. Estate Stewardship brings that all under one company with one level of clear accountability and high standards.

Why is Estate Stewardship part of the Legacy Program?

Outdoor environments are living investments that naturally change over time. Trees grow, gardens mature, hardscapes age, and your family's needs evolve. Estate Stewardship is the long-term relationship that allows us to guide those changes intentionally, helping your property continue reflecting the vision established through the Legacy Program instead of gradually losing its character.

Do I have to enroll in Estate Stewardship if High Prairie builds my project?

No. While many homeowners choose to continue working with us after construction, participation is entirely your choice. Many clients appreciate having the same team that designed and built their outdoor environment continue caring for it because we already understand the property's construction, systems, and long-term goals.

Can High Prairie care for a landscape you didn't install?

Absolutely. We'll begin by evaluating your property to understand its current condition, existing systems, and opportunities for improvement. From there, we'll recommend an Estate Stewardship plan that's tailored to your property and your goals.

How does Estate Stewardship protect my investment?

Your outdoor environment represents a significant investment, and regular care helps protect its beauty, performance, and value. Through routine inspections, proactive maintenance, and ongoing recommendations, we address small concerns before they become larger problems while helping every part of your property continue performing as intended.

Will my outdoor environment continue changing over time?

Yes, and that's exactly what we plan for. Plants mature, outdoor spaces evolve, and families use their properties differently over the years. Estate Stewardship allows us to make thoughtful adjustments as those changes occur, keeping your outdoor environment healthy, functional, and aligned with your long-term vision.

Can High Prairie continue improving my property after the original project is complete?

Absolutely. Many homeowners add new features over time, whether it's expanding an outdoor living space, adding a pool, installing landscape lighting, creating new gardens, or enhancing gathering areas. Because your property is planned through the Legacy Program, future improvements feel like a natural extension of the original design rather than separate projects.

Maintenance & Seasonal Services
Do you provide year-round landscape care?

Our Estate Stewardship team provides year-round care tailored to the changing needs of your property. Each season brings different priorities, and we adjust our services accordingly to help your outdoor environment remain healthy, beautiful, and ready to enjoy throughout the year.

What landscape maintenance services do you provide?

Our maintenance services are customized to each property and may include lawn care, fine gardening, pruning, seasonal cleanups, mulch installation, irrigation management, seasonal flowers, plant health care, landscape lighting maintenance, and other services recommended through your Estate Stewardship plan.

Do you provide fine gardening?

Fine gardening is one of the signature services within Estate Stewardship. Our horticultural specialists care for ornamental gardens, perennial beds, shrubs, and seasonal plantings through detailed pruning, deadheading, weeding, soil improvement, and plant health management, helping your gardens mature beautifully throughout the seasons.

Do you install seasonal flowers and containers?

Seasonal flowers and decorative containers are a wonderful way to keep your property looking fresh throughout the year. Our team designs, installs, and maintains seasonal displays that complement your home's architecture and the surrounding landscape while adding color and interest each season.

Do you maintain irrigation systems?

Proper irrigation plays an important role in the long-term health of your landscape. Our team monitors system performance, makes seasonal adjustments, identifies potential issues, and coordinates repairs when needed to help your plants receive the right amount of water throughout the year.

Do you maintain pools and water features?

Yes. As part of Estate Stewardship, we can coordinate the ongoing care of your pool, spa, fountains, and other water features alongside the rest of your outdoor environment. Having one team oversee these systems helps simplify communication and provides a more consistent level of care across your property.

How often will someone visit my property?

The frequency of visits depends on your property's size, the features included in your outdoor environment, and your customized Estate Stewardship plan. During the planning process, we'll recommend a service schedule that provides the level of care your property requires.

We visit a minimum of two-times a month with many clients opting for weekly or two-times a week visits. We do not offer monthly visits due

Who will be working on my property?

Your property will be cared for by our year-round High Prairie Pros. Unlike companies that rely heavily on seasonal labor, our team members receive ongoing training and build long-term relationships with the properties they care for, allowing them to understand your landscape and maintain the quality standards High Prairie is known for.

How do you communicate with clients throughout the year?

Communication is an important part of Estate Stewardship. We'll keep you informed about completed work, recommended improvements, seasonal priorities, and any issues that need attention. Our goal is to help you make informed decisions while giving you confidence that your property is being cared for proactively.

What should I do if I notice a problem between scheduled visits?

If you notice an issue with your landscape, irrigation system, pool, drainage, or any other part of your outdoor environment, simply contact our team. Because we're already familiar with your property, we can quickly evaluate the situation and recommend the most appropriate solution.

Can my Estate Stewardship plan be customized?

Absolutely. Every property is different, and every homeowner has different goals. Your Estate Stewardship plan is customized to your property's needs, the features within your outdoor environment, and the level of care you'd like to receive.

Can you continue enhancing my property over time?

One of the greatest advantages of working with High Prairie is having a long-term partner who understands your property inside and out. As your family's needs evolve, we can recommend and implement thoughtful enhancements that build on the original vision, allowing your outdoor environment to continue growing in beauty, function, and value for years to come.

General Faq

Some homeowners come to us for a full property transformation, while others begin with a single project that grows over time. Through the Legacy Program, every improvement is planned as part of a larger vision, allowing your outdoor environment to evolve naturally as your needs change.

Do you work on existing homes or only new construction?

We work with both. Many of our projects involve reimagining existing properties, incorporating mature trees, established gardens, or existing outdoor features into a new master plan. We design these elements as one complete outdoor environment because that's how families actually experience them, not as a collection of separate projects.

Maintenance and Seasonal FAQ

What are your minimum scopes and budgets for landscape maintenance?
  1. Our garden care and landscape maintenance services are curated for comprehensive, high end residential properties in our service areas. Our minimum level of engagement includes total landscape bed maintenance on a 12 month rotation starting at $500 per month with a minimum visit frequency of bi-weekly. We do not offer one time visits for general clean-ups or just mowing because our crews are trained and educated to improve and elevate landscapes throughout the seasons. That cannot be achieved in one visit.
  2. Optional scope upgrades include full property care: Mowing, Lawn and Plant Healthcare Programs, Seasonal Color Rotations, Snow Removal and more.
How much does professional landscape maintenance cost?
  1. Our comprehensive landscape maintenance packages range from $500 per month for twelve months all the way up to $11,000 per month for twelve months for multi-acre estates. The best way to plan properly is to visit with an account manager where your specific property details, landscape style, and desired scope will be discussed. Then, your account manager can provide a proposal based on your needs.
  2. Please note that a proposal does not guarantee an opening on our maintenance routes. Some areas currently have wait lists for our maintenance and fine gardening teams.
Who will be working on my property and how will I communicate with them?

Something unique about High Prairie team members is that we universally speak the same language in order to better communicate with each other and our clients. This does not discount any culture or language, but does provide comfort to clients who can easily communicate with any of our team members. Unlike competitors, every team member has passed a national background check to help ensure your security.

What is the horticultural knowledge of your crews?

Fine gardening requires a different skill set from “quick and dirty” landscape maintenance. It requires extensive horticultural knowledge, plant identification practices, and proper care practices to make an entire property thrive. Our fine gardening teams are comprised of team members with extensive and ongoing horticultural education. Many of our team members have degrees in horticulture and many of the others have years of valuable experience. The proof? Check out a High Prairie property!

What if I don't want a 12 month contract, but would prefer to only have maintenance during the growing season?

There are two key benefits to a 12 month contract: 1. You’re able to spread your investment out over twelve months instead of paying higher rates for 9 months. 2. Much of what sets a landscape up for optimum health is done in the off-season. To maximize the health and beauty of your landscape, things like structural pruning, water supplementation during winter droughts, bed redefining, drainage assessments, and many other tasks are scheduled during the “slower” months. Often the plants that die in spring and early summer are suffering from winter drought damage.

How do I know if I need weekly or bi-weekly bed maintenance visits?

Your account manager will help you determine what is best for you based on three key things: your desired level of detail, your garden style, and your budget goals.

How will my property be scheduled? Can I pick the day of the week for my visit?

Schedules are based on route openings and crew availability. Our crews often have limited openings, so we have to work within the parameter of those specific openings. We will always take your preferred days into consideration, but always honor the prior commitments of any pre-existing contracts. (We won’t move someone else just to make a sale.) Once your schedule is set to a specific day, we keep that schedule unless a weather occurrence or special circumstance causes a delay.

How will I know what's going on at my property and who will I communicate with?

Your key point of communication will be your account manager. Beginning in fall of 2022, you’ll also have access to your own web portal where you can review visit logs/photos, scheduled visits, invoices, pending proposals, and communicate. It’s never been easier to see exactly what is happening on your property and communicate as you need.
